  1. Methinks Cleopatra could have been a fat pig, and she still would have been courted for her country's wealth.
  2. The review is up, if you want to read it. I don't know how you define "detailed," but it did give a summary on the archaeological findings of town and country life, as well as military forts and defensive structures.
  3. I would take them to Germany. The idea that slovenly tribesmen living in wooden huts would eventually become the economic powerhouse of Europe would shock them!
  4. I just read "Roman Gaul and Germany" which is 20 years old, but a very interesting look at two provinces!
  5. Europeans sometimes use the term "corn" as a generic for what Americans call grain. A lot of older European scholars use it in that sense. Corn specifically they tend to refer to as "maize."
  6. May Fortune grant them success in their studies!
  7. Fascinating, if true. It would make a lot of sense.
  8. By the internal standards of the Romans, military conquest against foreign foes was the highest cultural value. Another time honored tradition was to provide infrastructure to the city and entertainment to the masses.
  9. Ah, a Hellenophile. I enjoyed the ancient tragedies immensely. I must part ways with Plato, however ...
  10. A Byzantine invention, I believe. I think the original article is bogus.
  11. Paul the Octopus predicts Spain over Germany
  12. This is sad. Maybe they should get EU funding to help preserve some of those sites. After all, it's Europe's legacy, not just Italy's.
  13. And I managed to get a used one for a very cheap price. Thanks!
  14. Things are a bit different than in the heydays of the site when you were here. However, I think things are on an upswing again.
  15. What are the best books to read on ancient Germanic tribes? I'm looking for cultural histories rather than just tales of service in Roman legions. Thanks!
  16. I'm with Maty, here. Secret Platonic codes are just too much....
  17. We were just complaining elsewhere that English language scholarship doesn't focus on the provinces enough. Ha. And, oh, does it seem like there is a new book on Pompeii every month?
  18. I just got Roman Passions. Not what I expected at all. I thought it was going to be an easy read on Roman vices, but it's actually a scholarly thesis. Still looks interesting, nonetheless.
  19. If you have an hour of free time and a sick sense of humor, you may find this enjoyable. (not safe for work)

I think that sort of broad, liberal arts education should be conducted at the secondary level, in fact allowing tertiary education to be more specialized. From what I understand this is what most industrialized countries outside the US do in practice, already. If American high schools were more focused on that sort of cultural and intellectual heritage -rather than sports and marching bands and "social awareness" training - we could make this entire argument irrelevant. My two cents.
  21. Abortion was totally legal in Rome until the later stages in history. There were a variety of plant based products a woman could take orally or vaginally to provoke an abortion.
  22. Aside from Roman Britain, I don't think English language scholarship really pays much attention to any province, does it?
  23. USA!! USA!! USA!! USA!! (oh, who I am kidding, I really don't care ...)
