  1. The article wasn't clear .... are these completely new works of Ovid that have been discovered, or just a collection of existing works that have been discovered? If it is the former that is certainly an exciting discovery.
  2. I think they should have buried him in an unmarked grave, and poured pig's blood over it to eternally defile him.
  3. I keep getting e-mails from Amazon saying there are delays in shipping. It might be Christmas till I get to to watch this and review it for the site.
  4. It's in my signature. Probably the smartest thing Cicero ever said
  5. I'm going to ignore the alleged parallels to modern politics. The Lex Gambina suggests to me the old style Republican system of commands was becoming obsolete as Rome became an ever expansive Mediterranean. Once a commander was given the full resources of the state to deal with the threat, the threat was crushed, and Rome's eastern frontiers reorganized more favorably to Rome. If the Senate had allowed itself to reform the process, perhaps it could have found a way to incorporate imperial commanders into a republican constitution without falling completely to a veiled monarchy. But thanks to people like Cato I guess we shall never know.
  6. History International: Roman Vice. Experts are interviewed about Roman food, sex and entertainment. http://www.historyinternational.com/schedule
  7. Oh, my. Many fascinating books this round! Thank you, Viggen, for including some Greek, Celtic and Egyptian books. I struggle now to decide which one I want.
  8. Thanks for your review, Maty. I had been wondering about the book. I have no problem believing this. The cynic in me suggests that, across time and space, most political elites seem to care more about employment than belief.
  9. I remember after the Iron Curtain fell, a retired KGB officer was interviewed who said the Russians had proof that it was a conspiracy. But, tellingly, he didn't offer any details.... There are things for me that don't add up about the official reports. But like Melvadius I reserve judgement. The most widely held theory that JFK was killed by the military-industrial complex to escalate involvement in Vietnam just doesn't stack up, as Kennedy was a committed Cold Warrior and might have taken that route anyway.
  10. Haven't seen the show, but I had a similar relationship with Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
  11. I watched the first season on DVD. I thought it was pretty good. I was going to buy the next 2 seasons, but I hear they aren't as good.

  13. Yep, the scientific words are taken directly from Latin and Greek, while the literary words are descended from Latin via French. It's only the everyday words that seem to be Germanic in origin.
  14. The episode the other night has a mention to her. This new season look pretty good, I thought the most recent episode was the best one in a long time..
  15. Some Americans do in fact care. Most of them are bored house wives who spent their lives wishing they were princesses.
  16. I listen to mostly classical, actually. Sometimes New Age or Neofolk. What can I say, I like soft music after a hard day's work. I can listen to more popular stuff (anything from Zepplin to Madonna) but I'm not a die hard fan like most people.
  17. I haven't seen the documents in question, but Kennedy's foreign policy isn't such a secret. He was always a ferocious Cold Warrior. The idea of him being wary of Vietnam (sometimes touted as the "real" reason he was assassinated) is some sort of overly romantic myth that somehow got attached to him.

    King Arthur Review

That review is spot on. The concept of the movie had potential. But the "historical consultant" seems to be a New Age guru. And the director's main experience was directing music videos. So between the 2 of them I think they killed it.
  20. I've seen some of the classic Dr. Who, especially from the Baker years. I think I prefer the "modern" series though, and Amy Pond. But RIP to a good actress. It's always a shame to lose a good person.
  21. There is not much to say on this thread that hasn't been said already. While not being as keen of male-male sexual activity as the Greeks, it was not unknown nor condemned in Rome. The main thing is that the person of superior rank had to take the active position. If he took the passive position to someone of lower rank, he was condemned as womanly and submissive (I believe it was the alleged passive activity of Caesar in regards to the King of Brithynia, not the homosexual act itself, that was used as fodder by Caesar's opponents). If there were special rules and regulations in the military about this sort of thing, that is beyond my field of knowledge or my desire to comment.
