  1. These days one hears allot of posttraumatic stress and depression symptoms in soldiers returning from war. Now i would imagine that 2000 years ago the traumatic experience of one on one battle must have been much greater then it is nowadays. Are there any works on stress and depressions in the ancient warfare world? Or are we now all just whimps and back then people could coupe just much better? Were long serving soldiers considered strange or crazy people with strange behaviour? cheers viggen

  4. http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?...9413623#9413623 does that adress your issue, if not i think there you are in good hands... cheers viggen
  5. ...great stuff would it be fair to also include the time period and location? Wouldnt it be for some a rather easy life for most of the time (in perstpective of course) , while other legions at the same time, were in deep trouble constantly engaged in serious battle?
  6. well that isnt even a recent thing, as it happens there is an exhibition in Austria right now called The Legend of Rome. The ancient foundations of the Baroque state http://www.museum-joanneum.at/cms/beitrag/11108591/41658825 just thought i chip that in... cheers viggen
  7. ...sure no problemo, sooner or later it is going to happen,
  8. thanks, i also found a coin, (not really pretty but one can see the IV http://www.livius.org/le-lh/legio/iiii_macedonica.html the intriguing part is they called themselves Legio IIII Macedonica but on the coin is IV so it seems it was both used at the same time? ...another example http://dougsmith.ancients.info/acmfrugi.html (first coin on the left top shows XCIV)
  9. thanks everyone, but what about Aurelias and Maladict`s argument? The notation of Roman numerals has varied through the centuries. Originally, it was common to use IIII to represent four, because IV represented the Roman god Jupiter, whose Latin name, IVPPITER, begins with IV. The subtractive notation (which uses IV instead of IIII) has become the standard notation only in modern times. ...did romans not use IV? and wouldnt with christianity becoming state religion, the Jupiter argument no longer be an issue? (@Maladict, yeah , the XXXII example is kinda cool) cheers viggen
  10. When looking at the classic way how numbers are displayed, and comparing them with this piece i found in aguntum (abbreviation of the Roman number 32 (XXXII).), or the 34 here i have two questions, was that common? (anyone have some pics of other examples?) why did they do this? (was it maybe for asthetical reasons to fill the line (because the first example is saving space, the second example is making space) cheers viggen
  11. thanks sylla for your detailed post, i have a question though you said, -Calidius first recruitment was relatively late (24 years old). that would mean he died while serving? if you say 25 years for the first term, how long would have been the second term, or would that be open ended? cheers viggen

  17. I lived for 6 years in South Africa 1995 to 2001, i must say i had very mixed feelings about the country. On the one hand, the country itself is really beautiful, and i am not only talking of the cape, but especially the KwaZulu Mountains, the Griqualand and my favourite place George and the Garden Route, on the other hand, i just dont see how this bubble is going to continue the way it is going, the middle class lives the live of very wealthy europeans, i mean in europe you need to be VERY RICH to have you own big house, swimming pool, maid, garden boy etc... The two most things that irritated me is first south africans can`t build houses, thats why i never been so cold in my live then in a Gauteng winter, (i can assure you, in austria when minus 20 degrees outside, i can walk inside with my underpants) and second the constant fear of something terrible is going to happen, crime rate was back then at least so high, it was absurd, within two years, i had three times my car stolen, two break in, and my wife was held hostage in a bank robbery, (which was also the point were i called it a day and left)... ...but i still dream of Biltong, the Braiis and the Blue Bulls clapping the Sharks
  18. ...last night i had a really strange dream,we were hosting a conference for publisher and authors, but who knows maybe i just glimpsed into the future... 19. no reason to apologise, and also thanks on both; now feel free to discuss the philosophical aproach on methodology and evidence in the Arena, and continue about Valerianus right here cheers viggen
  20. ...is this thread still about Valerianus, or about something else, i mean no one will join the discussion if this is going to continue in this way, and thats what we want, a lively discussion from as many bright heads as possible on a given topic, right? cheers viggen
  21. Very famous austrian documentary about Carnuntum, thousands of reenactors from around europe participated, unfortunately only first 10 minutes are free on youtube (its in english) real labour of love
  22. ...at least you guys didnt had to listen while watching TV (although to mix german schlager with him is kinda freaky brilliant diabolic in its own special way..) ...and this must be by far the worst with the most views (was a running gag on german websites), turkish germans, trying hard to be cool, (if you could understand it is even more hillarious, how hard they try und how much they suck... (if you make it till the end of the clip, even Freud would say "you have issues")
  23. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/comm...s_Carnuntum.jpg the inscription basically says (if i am not mistaken) he died with 58 after serving 34 years in the Legion (from simple horseman to Optio eventually becoming Centurio) 34 years are a pretty long time, right? anyone knows of archaelogical evidence of longer serving soldiers? So Pannonia is leading with 34 years....
