    Meaning of Life

...is there one? ...has anyone figured it already out? In the meantime i go with Peter Ustinov, who once said... The point of living and of being an optimist, is to be foolish enough to believe the best is yet to come.
  2. Petronella Wyatt writes at the Daily Mail about the recent trend the british seem to endulge, moving out of the city into the country side... Crime-ridden. Crushingly dull. Intellectually backward. Is there ANYTHING good about the countryside? A new report, State Of The Countryside 2008, reveals that an increasing number of middle-aged and young people are moving away from cities to the country, to enjoy what they believe to be a bucolic idyll, to bring up their children away from the dangers and temptations of urban areas.... Much of Nature, until moulded by the artifice of man, is not a very pretty sight - it consists of a great deal of weeds, mud and cow pats. As for romance, the country can kill passion quicker than a pair of rattling false teeth. My first crush sat me on a grassy mound, while attempting a passionate embrace. Alas, we were next to a bed of nettles. Needless to say, it was not my heart that was stung... What is wrong with cities, for goodness sake? There are better flowers and vegetables to be found in Marks & Spencer. Do not forget that the word civilised comes from the Latin civilis, which means civic, pertaining to a city... ...read the full article at the Daily Mail LOL, I like her article... Is she right that we tend to romantizes the country life style, especially now that we have the world wide financial crises? cheers viggen

...lol, you girls crack me up, wait till you see me wearing my Kilt....
  4. Excavations carried out in Bowes have revealed significant evidence of an unplanned settlement, called a vicus, which grew up on the outskirts of the Roman fort. Archaeologists discovered stone walls, foundations of wooden buildings, flooring, the remains of a huge Roman building, and large amounts of Roman pottery thought to date from the second and third centuries... ...read the full article at the Teesdale Mercury
  5. Adrian Goldsworthy is a British historian and military writer. Goldsworthy went to college in Westbourne School, Penarth. Later, after studying ancient and modern history at St John's College, Oxford, he completed a D.Phil in ancient military history from Oxford University. Goldsworthy is the author of such works as The Complete Roman Army and In The Name of Rome. We had a chance to ask him some question on his latest book How Rome Fell: Death of a Superpower... ...to the interview with Adrian Goldsworthy

  10. heheh, oh yes Life of Brian, what a master piece... as it happens Ursus, did just a wonderful review of Life of Brian - the Immaculate Edition my favourite scene would be Brian is given a latin lesson the Monty Python way... ..... CENTURION: Now, write it out a hundred times. BRIAN: Yes, sir. Thank you, sir. Hail Caesar, sir. CENTURION: Hail Caesar. If it's not done by sunrise, I'll cut your balls off. cheers viggen
  11. The world's "best loved - and only - biblical comedy." Or a "blasphemous incitement to violence." It all depends on which side of the theological fence you find yourself sitting. The Life of Brian is not exactly on the same level of Romanophilia films as Ben-Hur or Spartacus. But it is, simply, hilarious. Monty Python takes an irreverent look at a time in Roman Judea when everyone was looking for deliverance from Messiahs... ...read the full review of The Life of Brian - The Immaculate Edition by Monty Python

    Chick Flicks

I was recently told i am one of the few male that actually enjoys watching chick flicks, now what does that say about me? Chick flick (also "chick's flick") is slang for a film designed to appeal to a female target audience.... Although many types of films may be directed toward the female gender, "chick flick" is typically used only in reference to films that are heavy with emotion or contain themes that are relationship-based (though not necessarily romantic)... ...to put it even more drastic, i would like to quote Jude Law`s Character Graham Simpkins in The Holiday, as he referred to himself as a weeper when it comes to romantic movies... ...to my testosterone`s defence, i have to say though, that i do not have problems to go, after watching (and weeping) The English Patient, out on the hockey field and body-check the hell out of the opposition... now what does that really say about me? LOL ...whats your ultimate chick flick?
  15. ...so, i added now chapter III Intrusive Ideology - How pre-Modern ideologies have coloured our perceptions on Roman History Introduction Chapter I - Gibbon and the Pessimism of Empire Chapter II - Mommsen, Pan-German Unity and the R

  17. THE bust of Queen Nefertiti housed in a Berlin museum and believed to be 3400 years old in fact is a copy dating from 1912, an expert says. Swiss art historian Henri Stierlin, author of a dozen works on Egypt, the Middle East and ancient Islam, says in a just-released book that the bust currently in Berlin's Altes Museum was made on the orders of Germany archaeologist Ludwig Borchardt on site at the digs by an artist named Gerardt Marks. "It seems increasingly improbable that the bust is an original," Mr Stierlin said... ...full article at The Australian
  18. ...i am pretty sure the printing itself is the least problem... The thing is, that we need the original to be uploaded, those printing companies dont do anything if they dont have the highest resolution possible, and second i am curious if this would be something the public would be interested? cheers viggen

  22. While i cleaned one of my book shelf, i stumbled over a book named Parzival by german poet Wolfram von Eschenbach from the 13th century, i read when i was around 12, and i remembered the massive scope of this book and the feeling of Epic. In hindsight now that i think about it, it most probably was a catalyst for my interest in History... as it covers the search for the Holy Grail, i would assume it must be popular with the english speaking world too? cheers viggen
  23. May I lay aside all attempts at academic objectivity, and simply proclaim that this book is fun? Of course, one's definition of "fun" must include reading a detailed catalogue of macabre bio-chemical weapons from Antiquity. This is a work on ancient warfare unlike any other, with a certain haunting relevance in today's post 9/11 climate. Adrienne Mayor's Greek Fire, Poison Arrows and Scorpion Bombs is informative, entertaining and all too often chilling... ...read the full review of Greek Fire, Poison Arrows, and Scorpion Bombs: Biological & Chemical Warfare in the Ancient World by Adrienne Mayor

  25. A post from Aurelia on her blog about the promotion of a belgium show, really made me smile, in the comments Gaius posted a link to a video from a TMobile Ad were they did a smiliar thing in the Liverpool trainstation, i bet you left that place with a smile if you have been there... ...now i just saw that Tmobile did it again, After grabbing the publics attention with a series of teaser adverts suggesting something was going to happen in Trafalgar Square on the 30th April 2009 at 6pm, an astounding 13,500 people gathered there to be part of the follow-up to "Dance", but totally unaware of what it would be! and then they started to hand out microphones... love it, and amazing a german company is capable of something like this.... cheers viggen
