I am rather quiet on the forum lately, one of the reasons why, you can see below...

I was convinced that I knew quite a bit about the subject when I opened Mary Beard's The Roman Triumph. I expected a lot of new interesting details, maybe even some major elements that normally were left out- this was, however, not the case. A week later when the book was finished and I had put it back into the bookshelf everything had changed. I knew nothing, or at least very little, about the Roman triumph. Even so, in some aspects, this is one of the best books on Roman history I

During the downtime i had with my back I put on some serious weight. The negative highlight was 113kg (249 pounds for my american friends). At that point i really felt uncomfortable and decided its time to get rid of some kilos. I was pretty strict with mostly eating fruits and vegetable. I cut out snacks and sweets completely, use no longer suger in my coffee and after 5 weeks i am now down to 99.5kg (219 pounds), which is when you are 1.86cm (6.1 ft) still too much, but i feel much much better already. Now that i realized i dont really miss those fattening stuff, i decided to go for 89kg (196 pounds), which shall be my final goal. I keep you up to date....

Human remains found beneath the Vatican have been identified as belonging to St Paul, Pope Benedict XVI said, apparently laying to rest the mystery of a tomb first discovered in the city in 2006. Archaeologists found material and fragments of bone dating to the first or second century AD inside the tomb at the basilica of St Paul Outside the Walls in Rome. Vatican experts claim the tomb's position, underneath the epigraph Paulo Apostolo Mart (Paul the Apostle and Martyr), at the base of the main altar is proof that it belongs to the apostle... ...full article at The Guardian ...and a reply No proof that Vatican bones are St Paul's, says Dutch expert Responding to the claim by Pope Benedict XVI that the bones of St Paul have been found in Rome, a Dutch expert, Rengert Elburg, said Monday this can never be proven. Elburg, an expert on archaeological study of old bones and organic remains for the government of the German state of Saxony, told the German Press Agency dpa in an interview, 'It's impossible to establish that it's him.'

So you like Roman history, and want to know something about its art? Well, my friend, there are a variety of books out there. There is Roman Art by Nancy Ramage, a very thorough and surprisingly reader friendly study on the subject; unfortunately its hefty price tag is a distinct deterrent to the neophyte. John R. Clarke, on the other hand, writes art books at a cheaper price; however, his studies utilize cutting edge research in social theory and may not greatly endear themselves to someone who wants a quick and fast study. A third choice for those who want a very inexpensive and basic overview can be found in Roman Art, written by Michael Siebler and published by Taschen... ...read the full review of Roman Art by Michael Siebler

USA gave everything and played especially first half probably their best game ever, but second half the brazilians showed why they are regarded as one of the best! So well done USA and Brazil for making this a real pleasant evening! btw. 3:2 for Brazil for those that havent watched. (Half time 0:2) cheers viggen

yup, Spain beaten by the USA, regardless how you value that tournament, a win against the european champion and especially with their current run (35 games in a row unbeaten) is something the USA can be proud of. I am going to watch with great interest tonight Brazil vs. South Africa, on paper an easy win for Brazil, but let`s see how the Sele

Scientists discovered remains of the instruments in a German cave once populated by some of the first modern humans to settle in Europe after leaving Africa. The finds suggest that our oldest ancestors in Europe had a well-established musical tradition. The most significant discovery was a complete flute made from a griffon vulture bone. Measuring 21.8cm, with a diameter of about 8mm, the instrument has five finger holes and two deep V-shaped notches at one end... ...read the full article at the Telegraph

The largest cave ever found in Israel has been uncovered near the West Bank city of Jericho etched with Christian symbols, an Israeli archeologist said Sunday. The immense cave, which spans more than four dunams and is buried 10 meters beneath the desert, was dug about 2,000 years ago, Haifa University archaeologist Prof. Adam Zertal said. The site, which is located 4 km north of the ancient city of Jericho, was used as a large quarry in the Roman era and was probably used as a monastery and a hiding place for hundreds of years, he said... ...read full article at the Jerusalem Post

Sex. Despite several potentially hazardous side effects, people still seem to practice it regularly, and pursue it with vigor when they are not receiving it. What drives men and women to such madness? Scientists serve us some tripe on hormones and biological impulses, but our ancestors knew the truth. Love and beauty, and the all consuming desire they produce, are the products of a sensual goddess and her boy archer. Really, who could believe otherwise? Andrew Dalby leaves all doubt behind as he serves us a highly readable biography of the goddess Venus... ...read the full review of Venus: A Biography by Andrew Dalby

Long weekend getaway + 3 Airports + eleven times controlled/checked as if i am on some sort of watch list or member of an terrorist organisation = considering buying my own plane and screw that whole crappy procedure To give you an example; on my way home from Airport C to Airport B, i get controlled first at arrival (which means belt off, shoes off, all pockets emptying) in a queue of like 2 billion people (or at least it feels that way), finally its my turn and stop, somewhere it is still beeping on my body, so the thorough examination starts, back and forth about 4 times, it`s still beeping somehwere on my body but they couldnt find anything and finally give up. I move about 3 steps further to my hand luggage and i was told that i have some sort of weapon in side the bag and i must open it in front of them, so i open my hand luggage and we are searching for about 20 minutes through my bag to no avail, needless to say the queue behind me was getting reeeeaaaally long, and my patience was no longer existing. Eventually after putting that hand luggage 5!!!! times through that xray, they gave up (i would like to add that the whole time i was standing there without belt and shoes) I really feel that terrorist accomplished everything the wanted, they screwed up the lifes of millions of ordinary people.... p.s. i rather not mention any of those involved airports, because by now i start to believe they are out there to get me....

The skulls of scores of young men have been found in a burial pit on the route of a new road in Dorset. So far 45 skulls, believed to be almost 2,000 years old, have been found, and more may be found as the pit is emptied. Archaeologists have called the discovery extraordinary, saying it could be evidence of a disaster, a mass execution, a battle or possibly an epidemic. The bones recovered so far are still being examined but most appear to be of young men, and are believed to date back to the late iron age or early Roman period. They may be evidence of a fatal encounter between the invaders and the local population, buried at a site which had ritual significance for thousands of years before they died... ...full article at the Guardian

Imagine you knew nothing about Christianity aside from the mere fact of its existence, but you wanted to know more. Now imagine that all practicing Christians had died two millennia ago and all scriptures sacred to the cult had disappeared. All that remains to reconstruct the cult are some archaeological artifacts scattered across three continents, and a few oblique references in literature from mostly hostile sources. This is precisely the situation that confronts students of Mithraism... ...read the full review of The Roman Cult of Mithras by Manfred Clauss

I just watched today europe`s biggest TV Show Wetten, dass..? (which would translate into something like Wanna Bet..?). This show is one of the few i really like to watch on a regular base (its usually about 6 times a year), it has the , and some really funny moments on german TV. Todays venue for the show was the Coliseum in Mallorca, which is a wonderful setting to begin with, the next great thing was swiss Michelle Hunziker, a beautiful women that seems to be not only pretty but also has this feel good laugh and fun person to be around. (italians should know her well she hosts there a show). Finally, eventually it has been proven, white men can jump!

The highway was carved out of the Powys countryside in Newtown 2,000 years ago, and is thought to have linked two forts. Archaeologists are excavating three separate sections of the road, and they expect to uncover a total of 300 metres. The work will not delay the development of the supermarket. Archaeologists from the Clwyd-Powys Archaeological Trust are working on the site of the town's old Smithfield market, which is being redeveloped as a Tesco store... ...read the full article at the BBC
