    Rome

When I was offered the chance to review this book I was at first surprised and honored. I thus began my reading immediately upon its arrival at my home, despite quite a busy schedule (moving place and all that). Its 177 pages of text (201 pages when one does include the various index and notes) were written in an easy, rather pleasing way. As for its content, let

  9. I always thought that Adriano Celentano had something that i miss on most italians of today, the emperor look... , ---At 0:31 , Adriano looks like a Roman Emperor ...speaking of italian and emperor looks; watch Pavarotti at the last 10 seconds from 2:57 to end, i could imagine that this was how an emperor looked when he knew he has won the battle.... cheers viggen
  10. As all at UNRV know, I`m more of a philhellene than a romanophile even though I did study both civilizations during my studies and had more courses on the latter than on the former. I did also concentrate on warfare, a topic which of course would lead to some cross-civilization studies, especially around the 2nd and 1st century B.C. In the book currently under review this experiences is quite helpful because it does examine, among other, fights which happened between the two cultures, be it the campaigns of Pyrrhos of Epeiros or the battles against the Macedonian and Seleucid forces... ...read the full review of Great Battles of the Hellenistic World by Pietrykowski Joseph

  14. A 2,221-year-old silver coin dug up as part of a hoard is the oldest piece of Roman money ever found in Britain. Dating from 211 BC and found near the Leicestershire village of Hallaton, the coin was uncovered with 5,000 other coins, a helmet and a decorated bowl. Unearthed in 2000 by a metal detectorist, staff at the nearby Harborough Museum have only just realised its significance... ...read the full article at the Daily Mail
  15. In 79 CE, Vulcan pounded his forge beneath Vesuvius a little too harshly, and fiery destruction was rained down on several communities in its wake. Bad for the people living there, but good for us: Towns like Pompeii have yielded innumerable archaeological treasures about life in Roman towns in the first century. In Fires of Vesuvius, Mary Beard lends the latest voice of classical inquiry into this subject, furnishing a cautionary and skeptical account of the material remains of Pompeii and what we can conclude from them... ...read the full review of The Fires of Vesuvius: Pompeii Lost and Found by Mary Beard

    Open Air Hockey

This saturday i went to the first open air hockey game in austria (since well the old days), it took place in the soccer stadium of Klagenfurt in front of a capacity crowd of 30.500. It was magic, i never expected it to be so good. The atmosphere, the view, the game (my team won). You know, in my province hockey rulez, not soccer but hockey, always has been, so it was no surprise that despite the currently two worst teams in our league playing, tickets were sold out within 4 hours, and according to officials 90.000 requests for tickets came in.... I upload some more photos tonight...
  21. thanks Nephele for another excellent piece on the surnames of the Republic, has now its own page... cheers viggen
