Archaeologists have unearthed a beautifully preserved Etruscan house in western Italy in the first ever discovery of its kind. The 2,400-year-old building, uncovered at the archaeological site of Vetulonia near the Tuscan coast, is one of only a handful of Etruscan homes ever found. Nearly everything known about Etruscans has come from their extensive network of tombs. The remarkable condition of the house makes the discovery even more exceptional, say experts... ...read the full article at ANSA

Francis Wenban-Smith from the University of Southampton discovered two ancient flint hand tools used to cut meat at the M25/A2 road junction at Dartford, Kent, during an excavation funded by the Highways Agency. Tests on sediment burying the flints showed they date from around 100,000 years ago - proving Neanderthals were living in Britain at this time. The country was previously assumed to have been uninhabited during this period. ''I couldn't believe my eyes when I received the test results,'' said Dr Wenban-Smith. ''We know that Neanderthals inhabited Northern France at this time, but this new evidence suggests that as soon as sea levels dropped, and a 'land bridge' appeared across the English Channel, they made the journey by foot to Kent.'' Early pre-Neanderthals inhabited Britain before the last ice age, but were forced south by the severe cold about 200,000 years ago... ...read the full article at the Telegraph

We are happy to announce that we are giving away one copy of Rome: Caput Mundi Capitol of the World, just post below that you would like to be included in the lucky draw. The winner will be chosen randomly from all replies, deadline is the 6th of June 2010. Good Luck! ROME: CAPUT MUNDI Capitol of the World by Peter Melaragno Product Description - ROME: CAPUT MUNDI Capitol of the World. FIVE stars; TWO shows; 108 minutes. 58 min for the History then a 50-min step-by-step Walking Tour by a filmmaker who actually gave walking tours of Rome. Plus your own 60-page Pocket Guide to carry with you. This 2-part DVD is a WALKERS HISTORY OF ROME that prepares you for YOUR visit. The FIRST VIDEO is 58 minutes. It sets the thematic scale of your visit and touches on all the historical layers: the pre-historic, Etruscan, Imperial Roman, Medieval, Renaissance, and the modern. But it is the SECOND VIDEO of 50 minutes that explores the city as organically as a WALKING VISITOR does. It takes you STEP BY STEP (take a right; take a left) to all the important sites and offers suggestions for EATING AND LODGING. Included in the DVD case is a specially designed 60-page POCKET GUIDE to carry with you on your tour. It has a centerfold MAP and is coordinated with the 50-minute WALKING VIDEO. And if this is not enough, once you purchase, I will send you a LINK where you can DOWNLOAD your own MPEG-4 version of the WALKING TOUR. Install it on your IPOD or other video device and carry it with you to Rome. All cities are layer cakes stacked with detail. Rome is the most deeply layered of all. Few major cities offer the WALKING VISITOR such a spectrum of choice and most of it is free and out in the open. Let CAPUT MUNDI show you the way. Buon Viaggio!

Let us list wonderfulnesses committed by Rome.
Viggen replied to Artimi's topic in Imperium Romanorum
Language; You already comprehend that many intellectual concepts and traditions were created or survived through Rome. But did you realize that you communicate in large part through dialects and modes of Latin? Although English is a Germanic language, it was heavily influenced by French (a Latin derivative) after the invasions of the Norman Franks. In addition, Latins`s influence through poetry, art, legals studies, sacred and secular literature (et cetera) was so profound that Latin has both inspired and infected not only the concepts, but the very terminology that we use to describe and to conceive of our world. This brief declaration provides you a minute picture of how pervasive Latin is: vocabulary with Latin origins is italicized. ...from Eric Nelson`s Complete Idiot`s Guide to the Roman Empire... -

As a show of appreciation to our site contributors, every month one random selected contributor to UNRV.com will receive a small thank you in various shapes and forms. June is almost around the corner, so be prepared for a long and exciting journey to find out who will win what, only one thing is for sure, you have to be a "contributer"... If you find yourself on that list you will have a chance at being a monthly recipient. Winners will be announced in our forum. Rules for participation, weighting of contributions, etc., will be arbitrarily decided by UNRV.com, but single contributors will not receive more than one prize every calendar quarter. For those of you who aren't on the Contributor List... just submit a review of a Roman related book or an original article related to our site, and once published on Unrv.com, we'll happily add you to those that are already in 'the club'. ...in two days, the first "contributer" will be drawn... cheers viggen

Thanks we need it, its a huge upgrade (code wise), thats why we had to outsource it as it is very complicated (and expensive), some of the offered new features (that we might or might not integrate) sound pretty interesting, for admins, moderators and of course also for the regular forum visitor. We also upgrading the Blog and the Gallery, now this is the biggest expense we ever made and it hope it turns out to be worth the while... cheers viggen

Mesoamerican people perfected details of rubber processing more than 3,000 years ago, new MIT study suggests. Spanish explorers encountering an advanced civilization in Mesoamerica in the 16th century had plenty of things to be astonished about, but one type of object in particular was unlike anything they had ever seen before: rubber balls. No such stretchy, bouncy material existed in the Old World, and they had to struggle to find words to describe it... ...read the full article at MIT

Interesting article regarding coin collecting and the law... They're only worth about $275, but 23 bronze coins seized by the federal government at Baltimore-Washington International Marshall Airport last year just might be the most important chunk of change for numismatists in years.... Under federal rules, anyone bringing certain ancient coins that are Cypriot or Chinese into the United States must either have an export permit from that country or documents that show they were unearthed elsewhere or purchased before the regulations went into effect.... ...read the full artcle at the Washington Post

CivCity: Rome sucks. Really, there is no polite way of expressing it otherwise. Even if there were I am in no mood to couch my terms in diplomacy. It has been a while since I have had the opportunity to totally denigrate a product without reservation, and for that I have recourse to thank the people at Firefly and Firaxis for this wanting product... ...read the full review of CivCity: Rome
