  1. On an unseasonably hot day during an English spring, Lindsay Powell visited the Roman fort and remodelled museum at Vindolanda and its astonishing collection of riches. The famous Wall Hadrian built to separate Romanitas from barbaricum in Britain boasts several of the best preserved military installations from the imperial period anywhere, set among some of England`s most beautiful landscapes. Standing near to one of the highest sections of the Wall at Walltown Crags is one of the region`s must-see destinations, Vindolanda.... ...read the full review of Vindolanda Museum by Lindsay Powell

  7. Agora is a good movie, but perhaps not for the reasons it wants to be. As a historical piece, it is mixed at best. As a political statement it works well, though with all the subtlety of a blow to the head. As a visual experience, it is glorious. Directed by a Spaniard but with a broader European production crew, it does contain an intelligence and emotional resonance all too often lacking in American made films... ...read the full review of Agora (2010) by Alejandro Amenabar

Alexandria in Egypt is the second largest city in the Roman Empire, with an outstanding tradition of arts and sciences in the Hellenic tradition. Hypatia is a beautiful but virginal woman. As the daughter of an intellectual, she dedicates her life to mathematics and astronomy. Her school includes both Christians and Pagans (no Jewish students; apparently they prefer their synagogues). She suffers unrequited love from two men: Orestes, a pagan aristocrat who is also her student, and Davus, her man slave.... ...read the full review of Agora (2010) by Alejandro Amen

  14. Most people`s knowledge of Constantine`s rise to power amounts to little more than that "he was the first Christian emperor". Anybody who has delved a little deeper knows that the reality is far more complex and that the conversion from a Pagan to a Christian Empire was a long and often brutal transformation. David J Winter has set his first novel in the complex period surrounding the rise of Constantine to power and of the simultaneous rise of Christianity from being a persecuted sect to the religion approved by the emperor. The story details the profound impact that Constantine`s assumption of total control had on "ordinary" people... ...read the full review of The Fall and Rise by David J Winter
