  3. Mt. Vesuvius is erupting, Pliny the Elder just said. On Twitter. Destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius nearly 2,000 years ago, the Roman town of Pompeii was buried deep beneath ash and preserved following the catastrophe on Aug. 24 in the year AD 79. The city remained untouched for nearly 1,700 years, preserved as if in a time capsule. Now, 1,933 years later, the Denver Museum of Nature and Science is bringing the events back to life. http://www.foxnews.com/tech/2012/08/24/pliny-elder-tweets-fall-pompeii-eruption-mt-vesuvius/
  4. Archaeologists are investigating the discovery of a gilded bronze lion found off the coast of Calabria not far from where the famed Riace Bronzes were discovered 40 years ago. Armour in bronze and copper was also found by a diver and two tourists in the area that is now closed to the public as investigators probe the details of the find. One of the divers who made the discovery said there may be a ship and other important artifacts there as well. "When I went into the water, I saw a statue that was stuck between the rocks and a piece of the ship," explained Bruno Bruzzaniti. "The tides, however, cover everything and then you must be really fortunate to be able to see other items that are still at the bottom of the sea." The discovery sounds similar to that of the iconic Riace Bronzes, 2,500-year-old statues representing ancient warriors which were discovered in 1972 by a Roman holidaymaker scuba diving off the Calabrian coast.... via http://www.gazzettadelsud.it/news/english/9231/Archaeologists-investigate-sea-find-of-gilded-bronze-lion.html

A group of American artists is using 450 balloons and thousands of light emitting diodes to turn the 2,000-year-old Hadrian's Wall into the world's longest work of art. New York digital arts collective YesYesNo has been invited by organizers of Britain's Olympic-themed summer arts festival to transform the wall, built by Roman invaders to guard the northern frontier of their empire. more at --> http://festival.london2012.com/events/9000961832

  10. An altar has been discovered at the site of a Roman fort in Cumbria, the first such find for 142 years. The inscribed artefact was uncovered intact during an archaeological dig on the edge of Maryport. It was described as in "beautiful condition" and because it was face down in a pit its dedication to the god "Jupiter Optimus Maximus" was intact read the full article at Archaeological Daily News
  11. Earlier this year, Ocean X released images and descriptions of an object they discovered in the Baltic Sea between Finland and Sweden which has captured the imaginations of viewers around the globe. The team actually took the original imagery in June of 2011 but only noticed the anomaly later on when reviewing the footage. Sonar images appear to show a nearly circular object, as well as what may be a long "track" along the sea-floor stretching away from the object in one direction. The team reports that the object is approximately 60 meters (close to 200 feet) in diameter... ...more of this at Mathisen Blog

  17. In the days when Stalinism ruled Albania it was not uncommon to see official photographs in public buildings with faces scratched out. If you asked who the person was Albanians knew to respond 'who? I don't see anyone there'. So it was in Roman times. In this important study Harriet L. Flower explores the ways in which the Romans treated the persona non-grata in life and death. Harriet L. Flower is professor of classics at Princeton University where she currently introduces graduate students to current methods and debates in Roman history and historiography... ...read the full review of The Art of Forgetting by Harriet I. 20. The origins of Rome have never really caught the public imagination in the same way as the our preconceptions of the imperial period. Not without reason have the ideas of decadent excesses and crumbling empire inspired a century of Hollywood feature films. You might suspect this was purely out of ignorance, since the founding of Rome is not exactly the first thing we think of or read about. Yet so besotted are we with the idea that the Romans were somehow a mirror image of ourselves, modern people dressed in toga's, that we fail to remember that the Romans sprang from a primitive origin. They really did start from scratch... ...read the full review of Rome - Day One by Andrea Carandini

  23. I contaced (via email) every political party that is represented in austrian parliament! I had one question regarding a specific issue and what there stand is on it, and also if there are any person i could talk about it in my town and maybe (if i am happy with it) join their political party.... 8 weeks later i must say it was rather interesting.... 2 parties have not responded till today 2 parties have responded with a canned automatic response, not going into the fact that i want to speak with someone in my town 1 party did all i asked, (relatively quick reply, gave me contact person in my town and send me information how to become a member) 1 party i contacted even though they are not in the parliament, but getting lot of press lately here; the pirate party (but it is so chaotic there i couldnt work with them, i guess when you beyond a certain age, you need some sort of structure) I had a constructive talk with representative of party Nr.5 and after i am back from Rio de Janeiro, i might join them. I am not going to be the next president, but i might change some local stuff that i always wanted to be fixed. What better way to actually try and do something about it than just complain, right?
