  1. I have the privilege of reviewing this short but delightfully informative book, The Frome Hoard. The Frome coin hoard was found by detectorist Dave Crisp in a field near Frome in Somerset, England in April 2010. Two days before finding the Frome Hoard, Crisp had discovered some scattered fourth century silver coins (silaquae) in the same field. Returning to the field two days later, Crisp received an unusual signal on his metal detector only 100 meters from the site of the earlier scattered hoard and he began digging... ...read the full review of The Frome Hoard by R. 2. ...so for how much did you think it should have sold?
  3. Oxford Archaeology (OA) and a team of volunteers are excavating an extramural settlement at Maryport Roman fort on the west coast of Cumbria. Built high on the cliffs overlooking Solway Firth, it is believed the fort was founded in the First Century AD when the Roman army initially entered the region. Now, a project is being undertaken to explore part of the fort's civilian settlement to "build up a picture" of what ordinary life was like. Believed to be founded before 120 AD during the reign of Emperor Hadrian, historians say the stone fort was an "integral part" in coastal defences extending down the Cumbrian coast from Hadrian's Wall... more at the BBC

  7. Great news; With our move to a brand new host we are now finally able to switch on the reputation system. This allows members to like content and it works in the same manner as a "like" system often seen on social networking sites. This "like" system is a visual way for identifying good content and makes it more personal by leaving your name in the "like" list rather than it being an anonymous donation. Depending on your status on the forum you can give up to 10 likes a day (Patrician, or as little as 1 when you are a new member) If you have any questions or comments about the new "Like" system, feel free to do so here....

  13. Thieves are chipping away at the remains of archaeological and cultural wonders, removing prieceless artifacts piece by piece. Can Italy stop the ruins from being ruined forever? One might argue that Pompeii has never been quite the same since the catastrophic eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D. that buried it under 25 meters of ashen dust. But centuries of painstaking excavations and anthropological study have brought about 75 percent of the once-dead city back to a splendid life, making it one of the most important archeological sites on the planet. ...more at the Daily Beast

  16. Excavations at a Cambridge University development have revealed what archaeologists believe is Britain's oldest-known Roman irrigation system. Planting beds and pit wells were unearthed at the North West Cambridge site near Huntingdon Road. Chris Evans from the university's archaeological unit said they dated from between 70 AD and 120 AD. It was an "unparalleled discovery" and "effectively the first irrigation system we've seen", he said.... ....more at the BBC

  18. The concept of being able to pray to the Saints for intercession is one that is central to the religious beliefs of modern Christianity, especially with regards to the Catholic Church. Such an idea is now taken for granted by many Western Christians, as is the belief amongst many modern historians that the practice was established prior to the collapse of the Western Roman Empire and the transformation of the Eastern Empire into the entity now known as the Byzantine Empire.... ....continue to the review of Debating the Saints’ Cult in the Age of Gregory the Great by Matthew Dal Santo

  21. Using archeological evidence from shipwrecks and harbors, classics scholar Justin Leidwanger uncovers the story of economic networks during a millennium of classical antiquity. Marine archeology, Leidwanger says, provides a privileged perspective on ancient history. "There is a lot of theoretical work on the maritime economy of the Roman Empire, but I am interested in the close details of sea travel and how archeological finds can shed light on the history of consumption and connectivity around the Mediterranean," said Leidwanger. The social networks established by sea travel, Leidwanger says, were the basis of commerce during the Roman Empire, and in the shipwrecks and harbors he is able to see evidence of "who was interacting with whom and how and when these objects were being transported and for what reason." ...more at Standford

  24. According to a recent international study, the volcano of the island Santorini, Greece, erupted in the 16th century BC and not earlier. The survey characterized a number of research studies that took place in the past and have indicated that Santorini’s volcano may have erupted a century earlier, as unreliable because the method based on tree-ring measurements that they used, could not provide them with accurate results. - See more at the Greek Reporter
