Spanish police raided a winery in Aguilar de la Frontera near Cordoba in southern Spain on 21 March and seized over 5,000 archaeological artefacts which were on display in a clandestine museum in the cellars of the building.
The hoard includes a second-century BC Roman statue of Bacchus, a Roman sarcophagus containing the skeleton of a slave with a ring around his neck, a large number of Greek, Roman and Islamic coins, Bronze Age weapons, arrow heads, swords, axes, ceramics and farming equipment, Egyptian textiles, gold laminae with Greek inscriptions and a library of rare 16th- and 17th-century books and manuscripts.
