The USA has to accept its imperial status and the responsibilities which come with it. With its global dominions, militarist culture, and geo-political ambitions, the USA is an empire and should display some modest intelligence in looking to the past for answers to this complex role. btw. i edited the Title from America to USA, ...because the USA is not America but part of it... cheers viggen

After the collapse of Roman rule, coin minting and the use of money appears to have ceased for some two centuries. Britain reverted to barter and a largely rural, moneyless economy. Glyn Davies (1996: 641) notes that "after the fall of Rome Britain showed the unique spectacle of being the only former Roman province to withdraw completely from using coined money for nearly 200 years from Postroman.info any comments? cheers viggen

hehe, we have three admins and that will stay that way the number of posts has not much to do if and whom we choose a the next mod, but the quality alone... however, Ursus is doing such a great job, working like 3 mods, so i dont think we wont need one in the near future... saying that, we carefully watch the forum for the potential next one to be choosen all the time... cheers viggen -

I just finished an incredible book Marshall Plan by Allen W. Dulles Unfortunately the Marshall Plan is almost forgotten, although it is imho one of the greatest acts in world history and probably one of the most important things the USA has ever done in world affairs (as one reviewer said on the Amazon site) The United States offered up to $20 billion for relief, but only if the European nations could get together and draw up a rational plan on how they would use the aid. For the first time, they would have to act as a single economic unit; they would have to cooperate with each other. The Marshall Plan, it should be noted, benefited the American economy as well. The money would be used to buy goods from the United States, and they had to be shipped across the Atlantic on American merchant vessels. But it worked. By 1953 the United States had pumped in $13 billion (thats in todays money around $100 billion!!!), and Europe was standing on its feet again. Moreover, the Plan included West Germany, which was thus reintegrated into the European community. (The aid was all economic; it did not include military aid until after the Korean War.) Aside from helping to put Europe back on its feet, the Marshall Plan led to the Schuman Plan, which in turn led to Euratom, then the Coal and Iron Community and the Common Market, and pointed to what may yet evolve into an economically and politically united Europe. In many ways, the Marshall Plan satisfied both those who wanted our foreign policy to be generous and idealistic and those who demanded realpolitik; it helped feed the starving and shelter the homeless, and at the same time stopped the spread of communism and put the European economy back on its feet. via USInfo more info on the Marshall Plan at Marshall Foundation

It was a plane crash back in 1942 that wasn't discovered until 1947. Now, hikers made a frozen discovery in connection with a World War II plane crash. Hikers found the frozen body of an airman while scaling Mount Mendel Glacier in the Sequoia National Park. Now, the military is working to find out who this airman is and whether he was ever reported missing. It's believed the airman has been frozen in the glacier for decades until a pair of climbers got much more than ever imagined on a hike. full article at ABCLocal

MORE Roman gold is found in Britain than anywhere else - and now a Welsh academic has come up with an intriguing theory explaining why. Thousands of gold and silver artifacts from the Roman period, especially when the conquerors finally left these islands in the 4th and 5th centuries. Dr Peter Guest, of Cardiff University's School of History and Archaeology, is the leading expert on the biggest ever Roman gold treasure discovered in Britain. In 1992, 15,000 gold and silver coins were found at Hoxne in Suffolk in 1992. full article at ICWales

Over the next week, UC Davis ophthalmologist William Lloyd will dissect and examine the eyes of two North Chilean mummies for evidence of various diseases and medical conditions. One of the eyes belonged to a boy who was 2 years old when he died 1,000 years ago, and the other is from a female, who was approximately 23 years old when she died 750 years ago. full article at NewsWise

Officials from Berlin's Pergamon Museum announced plans Wednesday to dismantle and remove much of its famed Market Gate of Miletus over the next year and a half and to spend the next 10 years restoring it. The towering Roman gate, built around 120 A.D. as the entrance to the market square in the Aegean coastal city of Miletus in what is now Turkey, is one of the museum's chief attractions. But metal supports built decades ago are sagging dangerously. full article at ABC News

an interesting story regarding Trafalgar Day... Letters of Trafalgar warrior, aged 11 A REMARKABLE series of unpublished letters written by an 11-year-old midshipman who was at the Battle of Trafalgar has been acquired for the nation. The vivid eyewitness account of George James Perceval, who served on HMS Orion, a 74-gun battleship that played a key role in the closing stages of the battle, has been purchased by the National Maritime Museum. full article at Times Online

This is a list in progress of color laser printer models that do or do not print yellow tracking dots on their output. Remember that a "no" simply means that we couldn't see yellow dots; it does not prove that there is no forensic watermarking present. (For example, the HP Color LaserJET 8500 series does not include any yellow tracking dots that we can see, but it may still include some kind of forensic marking, since the majority of earlier CLJ models did.) Remember that a "yes" simply means that we (or another source, as noted) saw yellow dots that appeared anomalous to us. Until we decipher the marking schemes or receive other confirmation, this does not constitute proof that any particular kind of information is represented by these dots. In a very few cases, for example, they might be the result of a poor dithering technique, rather than a forensic mark. the list of printers that track your printing can be seen at Electronic Frontier Foundation

At the beginning of August, underwater archaeologists excavating at Lake Bracciano north of Rome brought to the surface a nine metre-long dugout canoe hewn from a massive oak trunk. Some 9,000 years old, buried under three metres of mud and eight metres of water, this was the fourth dugout canoe excavated since an entire neolithic colony was discovered near the shores of Anguillara in 1989. This village is unique in neolithic archaeology. Previously, no early neolithic site had ever been discovered in central Italy. More importantly, none had ever been discovered at the bottom of a lake. This one is located in the bay called La Marmotta at the foot of Anguillara

Feature Video from the Archaeology Channel Location: Turkey Length: 9 min. In 146 BC, just as Corinth is set ablaze by the Romans, Hermogenes, a young architect from Priene in Asia Minor, goes back to his home city to study the city-planning of Pytheos and especially to visit the old house of his ancestors, before it is torn down. This film is a 3D animated reconstruction of the city and that house, which is typical of its time. The reconstruction, based on the research of Dr. Wolfram Hoepfner, demonstrates the arrangement and functionality of a Classical Period residence. to the Video

The once bustling Roman town of Claterna is slowly re-emerging from the soil 15 centuries after it was abandoned and then vanished beneath farmland . As a result of haphazard excavations in the past, the remains of a few patrician homes have been uncovered at the site near Bologna, along with mosaics and some pottery shards . But a methodical, long-term research project is now getting under way for the first time ever, with funding from regional and provincial authorities, which have acquired the site . full article at Ansa.it
