  5. I can assure you, Romans had no concept or idea what a neanderthal was or even looked like... regards viggen
  6. well to be honest, the Varus disaster had imo the biggest impact of all battles in the history of early imperial rome, from that point on the idea of conquering the east of river rhine was basically dead, there were some raids into that territory but not much else, so imo the germanics never had to prove if they can or can not withstand the romans for almost 150 years then... ...and the goths (adrianople) well thats another story, so to sum it up, there were enough opponents apart from the parthians that gave the romans a hard time... regards viggen
  7. At the winter solstice this week, Germany is to open a replica of a mysterious wooden circle that is believed to be a temple of the sun built by a lost culture 6,800 years ago. The circle of posts, in a flat river plain at Goseck south of Berlin, has mystified scientists since its discovery in 1991 by an archaeologist studying the landscape from the air. An excavation found post holes and what may be the remains of ritual fires. full article at Expatica
  8. Europeans inherit their looks from Stone Age hunters, new research suggests. Scientists studied ancient skeletons from Scandinavia to North Africa and Greece, comparing ancient and modern facial features. Their analysis suggests modern Europeans are closely related and descended from prehistoric indigenous peoples. full article at National Geographic

  11. If i am not completely mistaken then the term "Germanic" was originally used by the Romans only as a geographical term, rather than a precise ethno-linguistic term. To the Romans, the territory beyond the Rhine and Danube rivers was Germania, and anyone from Germania was Germanic, regardless of ethno-linguistic identity, right? cheers, viggen
  12. The construction of the Roman Limes was quite possibly influenced by the concept of the Great Wall in China, though the two great buildings of the world are far away from each other, said archaeologists and historians. Although there is no evidence that the two constructions had any direct connections, indirect influence from the Great Wall on the Roman Limes is certain, said Visy Zsolt, a professor with the Department of Ancient History and Archaeology of the University of Pecs in Hungary. full article at Peoples Daily Online
  13. Dont get me wrong, feel free to use an image and/or a signature, but please do it in moderation and in a decent size, and then, well then you make me happy cheers viggen
  14. i was so close to promote you to Equestrian again, (you were helpful, made a wonderful review, etc..) and now come up with that huge signature image (sigh) regards, viggen
  15. Participating many years in online forums showed me one thing; people just dont read FAQs, Announcements, pinned posts by Admins etc... IMO it is a waste of time and space, people that are genuine interested in solving a problem will come up with a way (reading MyControl Panel that every member has for example), contacting an Admin/Mod or as Ludovicus did just asked in the forum... What we can do is make a thread here called FAQ and put in the most asked questions and if someone asked we just guide him to that topic... cheers viggen
  16. You might have overlooked that... on top are links called My Controls
  17. Hard genetic evidence that lice-borne disease played a key role in Napoleon's disastrous retreat through Russia in 1812 has been produced by researchers. Experts analysed dental pulp extracted from the teeth of soldiers who died during the campaign. full article at the BBC
  18. Exellent, thanks for making this review, it is now added to our featured review list and currently headline news! cheers viggen
  19. very nice post Ursus! "De oldgermanic word "goth", which is the name for everything divine comes from the protogermnic word *guthom - to call. The gods are so to speak "the onces you call" I will go deeper into the Germanic Polytheism on a later date, however just that much, in southern germany/austria there were slightly different names for the norse gods and some of them made it into days of the week... Odin ---> Wodan ---> (old english) wodnesd
  20. I am not sure if all people know what a rss feed and a feedread is, so i will explain it a bit first... more information here ---> What is RSS Now that you know what rss is, and that the Unrv.com Blog has a RSS Feed, you need a RSS Reader to get that info without actually having to go to the site. For example i use Firefox (you should too) and there is a simple Rss Reader extension called Wizz RSS News Reader, just install that and then you get a nice RSS Agregator Toolbar, where you can add categories and Channels. For example, you create a category called UNRV then you create within the category UNRV a channel you give it the name Blogs and add underneath the rss fead of the UNRV.com blogs http://www.unrv.com/forum/index.php?automo...g&cmd=syndicate Now what happens is when you switch on your computer and you click on the RSS feader and then click on channels you will see immediately if there are new entries in the blog, just click then on the new entry sentence and you are brought to the actual blog, well it is easy and every one should use it, saves time keeps you up to date and oh btw our main site has a RSS Feed too cheers viggen p.s. if this is all confusing, let me know and i am happy to answer all questions...
  21. The most important general understanding offered by history is freedom may never be taken for granted. History is what teaches us about our lives. It reminds us of what we are made of and what we might become, if we are willing to learn from it. regards viggen

  25. Well what would be this place without its regular contributors? ...so in order to say thank you to our Equestrians, who participated, discussed encouraged others to sign up and just made unrv.com the place it is today, we thought it is appropriate to not only say thank you but also to give a little christmas gift to some special people... The Triumvirate and the Patricians discussed who was contributing the most in each category and should be rewarded for it with a little christmas present from Unrv.com... The outcome is the following; The Postilla Historia Romanorum Award goes to Tobias, he will receive as a little thank you the book History of the Byzantine Empire: Vol. 1, 324-1453 The Forum Peregrini Award goes to Panthagus, he will receive as a little thank you the book The Ancient Celts The Romana Ethicaque Moralitas Award goes to Sextus Roscius, he will receive as a little thank you the book Slaves and Masters in the Roman Empire: A Study in Social Control The Gloria Exercitus Award goes to Felix Marcellus, he will receive as a little thank you the book The Making of the Roman Army: From Republic to Empire The Templum Romae Award goes to Zeke, he will receive as a little thank you the book Romans and Their Gods in the Age of Augustus The Imperium Romanorum Award goes to Spurius, he will receive as a little thank you the book Ancient Rome There was however a little problem we had two more people tied for a place to get an award, so we thought they actually deserve an award too, the first one was Jimbow he will receive the book Swords Against the Senate: The Rise of the Roman Army and the Fall of the Republic, the second one was Longbow he will receive the book The Roman Army: Legions, Wars And Campaigns Last but not least we also want to say thank you to P.Clodius and Lost Warrior for their long time contribution to this forum! They will receive a Roman Empire Map! Thank you to all the members and Merry Christmas to everyone! p.s. the winners should please send me asap a pm with their shipping details... regards The Triumvirate
