  1. There is a new security patch that we have to download, maybe after that it will all settle down... (personally, i dont have any issues with cookies) btw., when reporting bugs it might help to mention, Operating System and Browser (including version), to maybe spot a pattern... cheers viggen
  2. lol, well after googling the term "north of Watford", i can assure you for a regular citizen of Noricum, the end of civilization starts north of the Alpes Montes, so no difference for me after that
  3. I don't know if you intend this, Viggen, but this is one of those expressions (there are many in English, and maybe in other highly-civilised [ ] languages) that you use when you actually mean the opposite. I don't want to hurt you, but ... I don't want to speak out of turn, but ... Listeners know perfectly well that the honest end to the sentence would be ... but I'm going to do it anyway! In the same way, I don't want to be difficult, but ... is likely to precede some waspish little remark which actually makes finding a solution or a compromise more difficult than before. Alternatives, then. I don't want to be awkward, but ... is maybe better than "difficult" because it doesn't have the ambiguity pointed out by Favonius. More choices: I don't want to throw a spanner in the works, but ...; You're going to hate me for saying this, but ...; It isn't as easy as that, because ... There are some thoughts from me. Others may disagree. I don`t want to be awkward, but shouldn`t it be Peregrination instead of Perigrination? ...would that be acceptable? cheers viggen
  4. LOL, that sounds like i am from the "iunctus respublica extra oceanus atlanticus" (lol, ok i just made that up) , and i am not, i am coming from Noricum, simply crossing the Fretum Gallicum cheers viggen
  5. Again News from Austria, a tragedy, the only known celtic cult place that existed next to a roman settlement has been destroyed by a greedy landlord that illegaly tried to construct a road up the hill There is of course no english news of this, so english translation by Google To give you an idea of this very unique place were it all happend here the link to a trip i made a couple of years ago with image gallery...
  6. Interesting article about becoming an archaeologist... Age 15 - Am I too young to start? to Age 18 - should I go to university? proceeding with Age 21 - a career in archaeology and Age 22 - the circuit getting on with Age 28: am I too late? finishing with Age 50 - Can I still be of use? Conclusion; Archaeology has traditionally always been a career open to the talents; in recent years it has become more formalised, but there are still archaeologists rising to the top from the most surprising backgrounds: Martin Carver, the Professor of Archaeology at York spent the first 12 years of his career as a soldier: but when he came to archaeology, he shot to the top...
  7. New excavations have shown that romans have used "Gurina" as the first capital of Noricum territory. From 16 BC to 14 AD this was most probably the first "capital" of the new "conquered" area... It also suggests that the transition wasn`t all that peacefull but the celtic inhabitants were basically thrown out of the existing celtic village and were replaced by native Romans... The period can be traced so exact because of the very distinct footwear that had special crosses and stripes at the shoe sole. That were specially made for this winter campaign in the alps... unfortunately there is no english news for this here the link to a german site (translated by google)
  8. Google Code Search This new search from Google Inc. is probably only interesting for geeks like Moonlapse
  9. I mean ... not to be confusing on the topic of discussion... oh, btw spittle, my mother tongue is german (although Germans doubt that when they here me), i am from Austria! cheers viggen
  10. Thanks for all the replies Ok, here i have a questions, one of the phrases i regulary us in conversations is... I don`t want to be difficult but... any other ways to get the message across? cheers viggen
  11. as i thought, not so easy the answer... from Miriam Webster Dicitionary antiquity : ancient times; especially : those before the Middle Ages (which begs the question when did the Middle Ages start) ...it also raises in my opinion the question if the fall of Rome is considered the end of antiquity (while Byzanz flourished) and the classical antiquity of Rome and Greece ends with the fall (as docoflove mentioned mediteranean society, meaning basically European society?) ...is/was Byzanz not a european/mediteranean society? cheers viggen
  12. When does antiquity end? A simple question, maybe the answer is not... cheers viggen
  13. Atahualpa was well aware of firearms and horses, he had sent several of his people to spy on the spaniards while they advanced... ...another thing that bothers me, if i remember correctly in the 16th century a firearm was not a machine gun, was it not that it took very very long to load put the powder in and then shoot? Didn`t it take something like at least a minute for a shot? Plenty of time, theoratically it would have been very very easy to overthrough the spaniards, what really got the average incan at that day was the arrogance of the ruling class and the fact that the "untouchable" king was within a few minutes in the hand of the Spaniards, that was imo more frightning then anything else... cheers viggen
  14. ...because it doesnt take longer then that to read it... LOL, this is one funny piece of satire...
  15. I am not a native speaker but i believe my english is ok, however a very well known phenomenon is taking place, one gets comfortable with phrases and simple texts, errors that developed over times have established themselves and are repeated over and over again, and that limits sometimes the expression (and i dont like that). So this thread is for all non native speaker of the english language like myself (or anyone else who likes to expand his vocabulary) to get to get some help from the "experts" like Panthagatus or Pertinax that lash out words on a regular base that i never heard of before. I didnt like that at first, (at is was work to look up those damm words in the dictionary), but slowly i started to appreciate this... So lesson one, what are the most common spelling errors in the english language? (hey i just discovered aggrandize, a word i never used before)
  16. we have added now Caesar: Life of a Colossus to the review section!
  17. Just a thought here... When we started Unrv.com there wasnt much talk in the media or in the public in general about ancient Rome, looking back the last couple of months, its Rome everywhere, from television series upcoming movies, political talks, books from main stream authors, Rome, Rome Rome.... is it just me or do you also feel there is something going on here? cheers viggen
  18. This Conquistadores always amazed me, i mean marching like Pizarro with not even 200 men and taking the Incan empire in basically 1 day? (Battle of Cajamarca) "Governor Pizarro now sent Friar Vicente de Valverde to go to speak to Atahualpa, and to require Atahualpa in the name of God and of the King of Spain that Atahualpa subject himself to the law of our Lord Jesus Christ and to the service of His Majesty the King of Spain. [The priest advanced] with a cross in one hand and the Bible in the other hand, and going among the Indian troops up to the place where Atahualpa was

  20. Nera, lol i also thought you meant Nero, hehe Interesting enough, there is, as far as i am aware of, no book out there that captures the period of the "5 good emperors" in one volume... Here two more books that cover some of your prefered timeframe.... The Roman World 44 BC-AD 180 Roman Society from Nero to Marcus Aurelius
  21. As starter why not go right after Nero to the year of the four emperors? Gerrmanicus did a nice review of it! ...and of course Suetonius covers Caesar till Domitian. That should keep you busy... cheers viggen ...almost forgot, this book covers your time period pretty well, Grand Strategy of the Roman Empire : From the First Century A.D. to the Third
  22. Forget him, he is an angry man, who likes to destroy things, probably because he inhaled too much fumes...
