  1. Interesting piece of data http://users.fmg.uva.nl/lleydesdorff/us_science/index.htm cheers viggen
  2. I always wondered about the process and the dynamics a city goes through when declining in such an extrem (from hundreds of thousands to just 20.000 in 7th century) and also, what happend to all the buildings, infrastructure etc.., how must one image the city in 650 AD with just 20.000 people living there and buildings like the colloseum, the circus, the forum, scattered around. Were those majestic buildings a constant reminder for the inhabitants of the good ol`times? Would they actually have cared, were the suburubs a ghost town of thousands of empty buildings? Any research or studies on this? cheers viggen
  3. Roman ruins found in southern France have been declared remnants of the country's earliest known winery. The large site, built around 10AD, is still surrounded by vines today on the outskirts of Clermont l'Herault, in the heart of Languedoc wine country. 'It's really exceptional, and very elaborate,' Stephane Maun
  4. well not all US universites are from the same state either cheers viggen

oh, you were talking of the actual newsletter, i thought we are still speaking of the box at the left side of the forum okie dokie, might have to consider this then, thanks for the feedback
  7. MPC, those lists are difficult to evaluate, first of all those as it seems are made for english speaking audience, so it always favors english speaking universities. Second those list dont really tell how exactly the evaluation took place... Another thing is what does it mean best university? So Harvard is apparently Nr.1, would i go and study there Mining Sciences because of this ranking? Nope i dont think so, but one of the worlds best in this field is in Austria in a little town no one ever has probably heard in the english speaking world (other then people that are heavy into that) and would be for that a much better choice... btw. just happend i visit my uncle yesterday and heard that my cousin (who is the ultimate freak) who studies physics in austria decided to go to St.Petersburg (Russia) to make his Phd there. (he mentioned Hydromagnetic, Atmosphere plasma beams from the sun and how it effects spaceships, climate earth in general, but i eventually got lost with all this strange words When i asked why St.Petersburg, his simple answer was, they are leading in this field and by so far that he had no choice if he wants to proceed in this field, he even learned russian so he can qualify... cheers viggen
  8. why do the republicans bother, its going to be a democrat next time anyway p.s. btw. any idea why Presidents from the Democrats are so much more popular in europe then republicans? (my impression at least) cheers viggen

  11. voice over, you will never ever see a movie/series with subtitles in germany/austria
  12. yeah sure of course we have a slightly higher tax then the US has, but what do i get in return? Free medical service, free education, more then enogh unemployment money when i need it for as long as 24 months, 3 year paid parental leave when you have a newborn, till the 18th year parents get 150 euro for each child extra from the governemnt, a state subsided pension that is more then enough to have a comfortable last quarter of your life, so for me this seems a damm good deal but as i said, different societies have a different approach to life, seems to work in one way or another for both...
  13. fascinating, it is always interesting to see and hear from "foreign" countries different approach to life, here were i live universities and schools are (more or less) for free, you get free public transport to the school, dont pay for books and we are doing also fine... ...i guess charging money to breed our future top taxpayers seems strange to us, cheers viggen
  14. Well, finally Rome the first season is coming to free TV in Germany/Austria, is pretty much on all german TV magazines advertised, i wonder how the german version is, i defenitely let you know... cheers viggen

  17. Well, if the US is todays Rome, then in 2000 years we will have a nice website called UNAV.com ...the only thing i really learned from history is that nothing lasts forever... cheers viggen
  18. What marketing have you tried? What "liberties" are you afraid of? I gather there are several published authors present, here, representing a lot of publishing and marketing experience, and I can't see them refusing to lend advice. Near as I can tell, if you don't find this web site you won't be able to find the map. It's obvious that a lot of scholarship went into compiling and drawing it, and it would be criminal to intentionally keep it so unavailable. If you're worried about being able to handle distribution and legal issues, why not just hand it over to a commercial publisher? Just off the top of my head, Barnes and Noble has their own comparatively small publishing house, and would seem ideal. Let them do all the work while you take in the royalties. Mind you, I'm not envisioning a Brinks truck rolling up to your house every month, but still... Hi Marcus, ...as marketing is mostly my departement i try to answer... First of all, we are not afraid of anything This is an online "operation", so we rely on the internet, and currently google rules there, so whatever keyword you type in there when looking for a roman empire map/poster our site is on the first page, so people do find it. There are also many sites that refer to it already and the list is growing steadily. In addition of course we do get many word of mouth advertising (just like yours), which is in any case the most powerful way of marketing, as we do believe a happy customer is the best advertising there is... There is of course always room for improvement and we do try to get the word out as much as possible and we do also believe people like yourself that appreciate the map are our best marketing "vehicle" btw. Barnes & Noble.com no longer sells Prints & Posters We appreciate your effort and so please keep on suggesting ideas on how to get the word out cheers viggen

  20. This is just a short message in an norwegian newspaper but it sounds incredible therefor the post here... Norwegian arhaeologists are puzzled by a find which indicates an Inca Indian died and was buried in the Oestfold city of Sarpsborg 1000 years ago... full article at Norway Post
  21. I think the biggest problem in this discussion is that people seem to mix up global warming with climate change, Yes climate change has happend since the earth was forming, but the problem as i see it right now is that humans are interfering with nature and doing there bit to add to the climate change, but this has happend before, but not in the way it does the last 50 years or so... "Global Warming aka Climate Change" doesnt mean it is getting hotter in a linear way, it means volatile weather, extrem weather conditions seem to become a more regular thing. Another thing i dont like is to dismiss global warming and forget the basic message, "Treat your eviroment better" If we keep on burning unfiltered stuff in the air, keep on cutting down the rain forest, keep on living the way we are living right now, we might just have to face what the cree indians had to say about this hundred years ago... "When the last tree is cut down, the last fish eaten and the last stream poisoned, you will realize that you cannot eat money." cheers viggen
  22. Interesting new study from the University of Purdue about the Mediterranean region and the climate change... A study led by a Purdue University researcher projects a 200 percent to 500 percent increase in the number of dangerously hot days in the Mediterranean by the end of the 21st century if the current rate of greenhouse gas emissions continues. The study found France would be subjected to the largest projected increase of high-temperature extremes. http://news.uns.purdue.edu/hp/DiffenbaughHeat.html cheers viggen
  23. For 2,000 years, the document written by one of antiquity's greatest mathematicians was ill treated, torn apart and allowed to decay. Now, US historians have decoded the Archimedes book. But is it really new? full article at the Spiegel
  24. To clearify recorded history in austrian context, Scientific records of austrian weather is done by the austrian weather bureau since 1873 and records of austrian temperature is known (without todays standard though), back to the late 17th century. cheers viggen
  25. Nevertheless, we had the hottest april, the hottest may and the hottest june since recorded history (currently 36 degrees in my hometown), we had the hotest decade here since recorded history, if it is man, machine or natures fault, i dont know, i do however know it is damm hot now in austria (and on a site note, in my province because of the warming, wine is now growing) cheers viggen
