Hyoscyamus niger (2)

Pertinax

Henbane in its saturnine glory-the "submerged leviathan" of ancient brewing. One of the surgeon's anesthesia in the field for Roman armies,I have a previous botanical drawing entry and some notes in the blog that refer.

As I mentioned previously this is the herb given to Pullo after Vorenus rescues him from execution , whilst he is recuperating in order to sedate him.

Still used as the basis for modern premed anasthesia

it's really pretty! and very interesting :D

A powerful plant-pretty but not for the unknowing person. A sophisticated medicine that should be treated with greatest respect.

I wonder why 'niger.' Is the inside of the flower blackish?

very ,especially in the much deadlier Egyptian variant H.muticus.Hyoscine ,derived from this source is still a common pre-op medication.
