this is the reason for the longevity of the fort here-the shot shows the River Esk adjacent to the fort-the previous shot showed only the flattened (and as yet unexcavated) fort site, if one were to walk across that site this is the view one meets.This is the westernmost fulcrum of the Western defences of Hadrian's Wall.Hence the great longevity of Roman occupation here.

I you only look at the bottom of the shot it looks like the pictures from the mars landers.... (minus the wetness of course)

 

I have earth from the site on my shoes-it is a wholesome mid-red colour. The Rhinos in the Zoo to the south of the peninsula are a delightful pink colour from rolling in this medium.
