Ice Age Spear Head from South Carolina

Pantagathus

Found this after a new fire brake was cut on a friends timberland in 1991. My North American Archaeology professor a year later dated it to the Late Pleistocene. He said "Sean, somebody was sticking this into the side of a mammoth"

Once again, not happy with the lighting but it will sufice for now.

There's always the misconception that these spears were used for throwing, but in reality, the icemen used to stab, its no wonder lots of them died or got severly injured when you've got to come up to a mammoth or mastodan at point blank and stab it in the side. If it was used for throwing, killing the animal would be easier, well not until spear or javelin technology was improved ages later.

LW:

My Great Uncle had a couple of thousand acres of timberland in Virginia and over the course of his adult life he had recovered two huge baskets full of native american artifacts. The trick is to always keep your eye on the ground when you're walking in the woods and investigate any rock that looks even remotely like an arrow/spearhead. Especially if a field was just plowed or a fire brake is cut. (Churns the artifacts up that might be deep in the soil.)

You live on some acreage... Do you have a creek near by? Areas of natural shelter? Likely stone source? (cert, flint, even quartz!) I bet if you pick a place that you feel is likely an ancient man would have spent his time and mark off a 10X10 area and dig down, you will find something. :D

Yea I do have a crick, running through my back yard. I have two of them. Lots of forests too, and lots of Native Americans are still there today. I'll have to do some looking around when the snow melts. It's cold there now. Freezing, actually.

I have found things, but they aren't ancient artifacts. I found lots of broken crockery left over from previous inhabitants (in one case a piece of an old toilet lol)
