longbow 0 Posted March 31, 2007 Report Share Hi Lost Warrior, nice Bow you have there! In England we call those Bows FlatBows because our Longbows (Elb) have a specific design to stick too.A English Butt Bow (Victorian style for hunting) is shaped like a D with the rounded part being the belly,it has no built up riser (handle) but the handle area can bulge out a little.Only the limbs are working on these types of Bows same as your Bow,the handle area is stiff and doesnt bend.A Horn arrow pass may be used but not allways so,the handle area is allso covered with a grip usually leather. The Nocks have to be made of Horn, historically Cow was used but today Buffalo Horn from India is most common. What types of wood are in your Bow?can you give us the specs? Whats its length Nock to Nock, whats the draw weight, what length is it tillered to,what size arrows are you using? I love talking Bows . The English WarBow is not to be confused with the English lonbow,Longbows or Butt Bows were designed by the Victorians for target shooting not for Wars. The Bows used during the wars were a different design shot in a different style and much more deadly.WarBows have no handles and no stiff area, they bend full cumpass which gives a lot more power. My WarBow is 77" Nock to Nock 75lb at a 32" draw, the 32"draw is important for WarBows,32" is past your ear making your aiming a instinct and not a sight as you do with the victorian 28" draw to a anchor point on the face, usually the chin or cheekbone. My Bow was made by a English Bowyer called Steve Stratton who's one of the best Bowyers in the world at making military spec WarBows, but there is a couple of excellent Bowyers in America who are now making EWB's,i can get you deatails if you want one LW? Here's a pic of it,its a laminate made from Hickory, lemonwood and greenheart with white Cowhorn Nocks. The hand area, the cross is the arrow mark. Size comparison with a Hungarian HorseBow (which is a joy to shoot!) Arrows,32" cedar shaft with 7.5" goose feather fletchings and a steel field point (making a new batch now with some armour piercing heads :2guns:). Longbow. Quote Link to comment
