Do I not recall an early American Liberal (Whig) not "liberal" calling for the death penalty as a humane way to stop a prisoners suffering in long incarceration?

Well it seems his Defense was right on the mark in their closing arguments...

 

They basically said he's a contemptable, mean, crazy person, but putting him to death is no punishment and would be playing into the hands of the extremists and giving him personally what he obviously wants.
