Thought you might enjoy a photo I took while in Rome this summer. Note the focal point: the Roman Senate building, still standing while the Basilica Julii is in ruins. Yes!

Are you refering to the Curia? If you are I believe it was built by Caesar (or started by) because the otherone was used as a funeral pyre for my namesake.

I was under the impression the Curia was commenced under the Divine Julius and was finished under the Divine Augustus after the lastone was used as a funeral pyre for my namesake

This Curia was commisioned by the Divine Julius and was finished by Augustus. Laughing on the other side of your face?

Just goes to show that even in chains the senate was greater than that darling of Venus!

I love that term - darling of Venus, just something about it. I may have to use it in a song, it's crying out for that treatment.

Now,I am writing from memory here - but wasn't a Christian church built around the old Curia (which isn't the Augustan one in any case), and that was why it survived? This is even worse than the barbarians ignoring it! :P

Seriously, much of what we have from pagan Roman is due to the Christians' appropriation. Of course, had the Christians not spent so much of the empire's wealth supporting the idle hands and empty skulls of the monks and bishops, there might have been sufficient resources for legionaries and officers to have defended the empire...but that's another story.
