Nephele 4 Posted April 22, 2009 Report Share The word Carioca is used to refer to someone who is born in Rio de Janeiro. Oh, so that's what the word Carioca means! Thanks -- I never knew that! I always thought it was a type of dance, as in the brilliant dance number that Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers did in the movie Flying Down to Rio (1933): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFBt929GtdU Now I can understand how the dance got its name! -- Nephele Link to comment

Cariocas don't really dance like that, at least I don't although I can hold my own while dancing the samba. And what's with the musicians wearing the sombreros? I think Fred and Ginger must have flown to Mexico by mistake and thought it was Rio. Link to comment

The way Fred and Ginger stick their foreheads together throughout most of that dance (even twirling around with barely a break in the forehead action) leads me to re-name that: "The Conjoined Twin Dance." -- Nephele Link to comment
Formosus Viriustus 0 Posted April 22, 2009 Report Share Nice cartoon, Aurelia ! One of the best. Thanks ! And can't have too much Ginga & Fred, can we ? This one is a bit silly though. So here's my contribution : not Rio but Buenos Aires (well, it's broadly the same direction, seen from here, there's some dancing and it fits the period and ... any excuse is good enough to watch that clip ...) Thanks for the clip! I have always considered Rita Hayworth to be a MUCH better dancer than Ginger Rogers. I'm very much into dance, and I've got a collection of those old movies on DVD. -- Nephele Link to comment
Aurelia 35 Posted April 22, 2009 Report Share I like Rita better too. But hey, let's not forget Brazil's own Carmen Miranda! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M7UgkjTKZks EDIT: I like this clip as well Link to comment

Aurelia 35 Posted April 23, 2009 Report Share So... time to come up with some gothic anagrams for the divas? I'm a complete beginner but let me give it a try. I'll start with my countrywoman Carmen Miranda: (I couldn't find any gothic versions of Carmen and am too lazy to use photoshop but she looks a bit vampire-like in this one, I think... ) Dame Carrma Carmen Miranda - rn Marrema Rancid Anca Merrmaid hehehe... Nephele 4 Posted April 23, 2009 Report Share And to finish off.... Ignorre G. Gores Ginger Rogers Heh, you slipped an extra "o" into your angram there. But her name is a tough one. I'll give Ginger a gothic anagram alias, using her original first name: Ginevria Rigors = Virginia Rogers That was a great pic you found of her! Very dark! -- Nephele Link to comment

I can see you are "slightly" biased towards Rita. :-) Ha! I don't think G is a tough nut to crack. I quite like my anagram. It just needs a little adjustment, as Nephele pointed out: Ignorre G. Formosus Viriustus 0 Posted April 29, 2009 Report Share Now, don't get me wrong, I like Ginger. Good looking, an excellent dancer and an excellent actress. But if my sources are correct, she wasn't the easiest one to get along with. It's not that I don't like strong minded women but I believe that she was a bit of a b... and that she treated Fred like sh.. . It's very hard to forgive her for that. And for the rest, well, there's no comparison really. Rita easily makes my all-time top ten. So, just an excuse to give you another Rita clip. This time with Fred, no less. Link to comment

Yes, Ginger did have a reputation. But if I'm not mistaken, so did Fred... Link to comment
