Pliny might be a bit shaky in this area so dont shoot any bears,and certainly avoid drinking mercury ,the Maidenhair fern is certainly a good digestive aid and kidney tonic/gall bladder cleanser.. Henbane is a tricky plant, certainly the Romans used it for anasthesia (tropane alkoloids) but the Egyptian variety is much more potent than other species-so ift depends where the herb was supplied from.

Mistletoe is a European parasite with a potent mythical background,it is a cardiac tonic but it requires only a very low dosage - it can be violently purgative.This was the sacred herb of the Druids, a protection from all Evil-and it survives with us today in Xmas wreaths, so positioned to ward off malign influences at the solstice.

 

Like Poppaea you can bathe in ass's milk, though not for your skin-but to draw large roundworms out -hence I wondered if Cleopatra knew this trick as the Egyptians were keen on purging, and must have suffered with helminth infestation.

 

Apollonius says that scraping a sore tooth and gums with the tooth of a man who has met a violent death is highly effective. Again avoid this one I think.Clove oil will help though.

 

 

Foreign Beer Update:-

and as promised-this evening we consumed-Duchesse De bourgogne (west flanders not Ned Flanders ), Cuvee Des Trolls (Scalsis), and Chimay (Blond), and Orval (Trappist). Pantagathus did you get ;) that?

Did you hear of the cure for a stomachache, which was to wash your feet and then drink the water? This seems as if it would CAUSE a stomachache, or much worse...

I love reading Pliny's anecdotes on what to use for what. It can be quite entertaining!

 

As for the beer selection, very nice. Especially the Duchese! I think you know how I feel about that one from TNOG!. Flemmish sours are a wonderful thing.

Sour is the word-as happens everyone just wanted to try a sip-but it was too lip puckering for them :)

On that note, Rodenbach just arrived in Atlanta. I had a 750ml of Grand Cru all to myself because I guess I'm the only one who really enjoys Flemmish Sours

As Lord Melchette would say "Au contraire Blackaddder", I suggest a light Troll to start, Chimay Red to enhance learned discourse and a Sour to round off the night, or for the strong of liver a Kwak .

My co-worker (as you say in the Americas) arrived at work inebriated having drunk numerous Leffe blond in his especially vast 1500ml glass, we didnt understand his behaviour at first until he was seen drinking tea and singing to passerby outside the premises, in his shirtsleeves ,in sub zero weather.

The triple I enjoyed more than the Kwak,( wheat ,oats and barley ?).Did Imention we had Anchor Porter?

The Kwak is like eating best quality Turkish Delight-from time to time and a little at a time What about the "glass" it comes in?

I like Triple K more too. My Girlfriend :wub: it. In regards to the Kwak I think they bottle it differently in the states & it's pretty plain jane.

 

Anchor is a great brewery, if you don't have access to their Christmas, I'll set one aside for you. Looks like I need to put together a care package for you!
