Welcome To The Emperor's Court!

Salve! Welcome to the court of the Maximus Augustus Caesar Imperator Goblinus, who rules the vast Roman Empire by the will of the gods (or God). Enter, lowly citizen, for you have been allowed an audience with the Autocrat of the Romans, and the voice of the SPQR.   Anyway, this is my first blog entry. As my blog profile says, I am currently a freshman (or firstyear, as they are called at UVA), who is probably going to major in History and minor in Astronomy. My area of expertise I think w

Diplomat Shot Bootblack

Well this is not going to make headline news around the world, but it makes me angry. In a few words; A diplomat wants his shoes polished in a noble hotel in Vienna. The bootblack tells him that he is now on a break and he has to wait a bit. The diplomat gets upset starts arguing and eventuelly fires a shot at the bootblack...   Now nothing is going to happen to the diplomat, "Diplomatic immunity ", All we can do is tell him to leave the country... Do you feel this is right?

Unseasonal Weather And A Visit To Lantern Waste

My trip to Aqua Sullis and outlying settlements of interest (to the forum) was terminated abruptly by snowdrifts forcing me to take shelter at the nearest available Hotel and wait for the roads to clear -regrettably I was unable to make any headway to even local sites or museums . I returned early today as more snow is now falling. I have posted a shot of my Hotel garden-looking suspiciously like Lantern Waste in Narnia.

What a week so far, and it ain't half over.   We're moving this weekend to a new place, so we're busy with packing and light moving (we have an overlap of four weeks to move, but we want to get primarily re-located this weekend). I have been working on finishing the new basement as far as we can to make it into a functional room in the evenings ( I hate sanding dry wall mud, especially over my head for the new ceiling) The evenings are for moving light loads too. My shoulders are playing "I s

Tiberius 'tribute Penny' Silver Denarius

The famous coin believed to be that referenced in the testament of Jesus Christ (Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke)   "Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not? But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites? Shew me the tribute money. And they brought unto him a penny. And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription? They say unto him, Caesar

The Lance Thrower By Jack Whyte

Like many people, I found the first few books in the Camulod Chronicles to be exceptional but I lost a little bit of interest in the latter books of the series. Not that any of the books were less than great, they were worth every penny in my opinion. It's just that the first books were so remotely distant from anything 'Arthurian' and so intimate with the lives of the Romans that the story was centered on.   Although the stories in subsequent volumes are intriguing and well written, it seems

Life Sucks "again."

Some or if any may notice that I'm as of lately rarely inactive. I have very good reasons:   1) For about a whole month, high school made a serious challenge on me, the RESEARCH ESSAY.The extra hassle was that I had a teacher who absolutely loved grading papers and she has very high standards which I barely live up to. So there goes weeks of my life spent writing and writing and writing...writing. We had to focus our essay on the subject of 20th century American authors. I first got stuck with

L. Manlius Torquatus Denarius 82 Bc - Sulla

This coin, the first entry in 'Moneta Romana' is a very recent purchase. While its value is moderate for a coin of this type, the image of victorious Sulla in triumph despite his own version of despotism, is a classic representation of the glory that was Rome.   Moneyer: L. Manlius Torquatus. He was Sulla's Proquaestor during the wars against Mithradates VI. Mint Year: 82 BC Type: Silver Denarius Weight: 3.71 gm   Obverse Legend: L. MANLI, PRO.Q (for proquaestor). Obverse Image: Roman h

A New Beginning

Considering that this site is dedicated to Roman history, I thought it prudent to maintain a blog that is more appropriately related. Hence, you may have noticed that my rather sparse previous entries on randomness have been eliminated. These will be replaced with a blog dedicated to Roman numismatics. This will not be an in depth review of coinage, but simply a place to reveal items within my personal collection. Unfortunately, that collection is not particularly large, so hopefully this bl

Aqua Sullis

I hope to have a little time away in the next week, if all goes to plan I hope to report from Aqua Sullis , Corinnium Dobrunnorum , Vxacona, Vertis , Salinae and Colonia Glevensis. I hope also to look at some Marcher Castles in the Welsh Borders. As usual the weather will require the indulgence of the Deities at this time of year. Aqua Sullis alone will be photogenic in the rain.So I hope I will have more images for you soon.

There Is Always A Balance

So, I had a great time in Jamaica. Fabulous.   Getting there and back was an absolute nightmare as I had to end up renting a car to Ft. Lauderdale (from Atlanta = +9 hours) to be able to catch my flight and again on the return. That was not in the plan. Especially monetarily...   I came back this week to a flooded basement and a missing cat (luckily not for long) and a week long Advanced Engineering refresher that was really just a misuse of my time. Furthermore I am having to host a 30th Bi

Scared...

Well, today was a good day. I had little homework, and I spent most of the day bobing around in various things. I went on a nice trip with my dad to Sears and then to some other stops in the convertable (which I think he bought out of his mid-life crisis) which was fun. We started talking about politics and what was going on. My dad is different from me in political views in a lot of ways, but we are the same in some. He is very anti-muslim. He sits on the stand point that even though not all of

A Good Day At The Beach

I went down to the beach where my parents live this weekend, and had a really good afternoon on Saturday snokelling. It was a dead low tide, and very calm. I saw lots of parrot fish, wrasse, sweep, darts and whiting. The water was really warm for Victoria (the state I live in) and some of the pools I swam in were beautiful. The rocks were absolutely covered in life, all kinds of colorfull seaweed and lichen and growth.   My parents retired to Barwon Heads, on the Bellarine peninsular, about a

Eighteen

So, yesterday was my eighteenth birthday. Officially an adult. Wow...kind of a smack in the face lol.   I got my drivers license yesterday, on my eighteenth birthday and hid the fact that I was taking my test from my mom, so I could surprise my entire family with the news. I was going to wait 'till we were at the restaurant to tell them, but they took their jolly good time in us leaving and so I told them all while we were still at my house. Probably a good thing, because the way they reacted

Roman Herb Garden

My seeds have arrived today from the Nursery in Broadstairs . If all goes well-not too much rain in the spring-I should hope to replicate some of the features of a Romano-British Physic garden , and have some definitive photographs for the Roman Herbal Gallery by summer. We have Betony, the Celtic favourite for those given to "visions and dreams" (anti psychotic/nervine). Yarrow-the Roman Soldiers'Herb for the "wounds made by iron weapons". Woad-the Pictish and Brythonic choice for combat ad

The Week In Review

Lets see what have I done this week ? The most interesting night by far I will describe for you below:-   Caught up with a mate earlier in the week. He came around with his new girlfriend and I made a green curry duck. The duck was excellent, and the conversation was lively. We drank a bottle of wine and after dinner decided to go play some pool (8 ball) at the local.   We walked in and I slapped a buck down on the table. In my town, if someones on the table you have to pay for the next game

Palm Reading And The Expectations For Tomorrow

Well, I had my palm read today. Not much of value. Stuff about I was going to either become a very religious man or die early in life, I will be married in my late 30s, I'm agressive and what not. I think palm reading is a bunch of huey though, after all, the outcome is purely a result of the conditions around you and more imporantly, your hand. If it is very cold out, you hand will have a lot of blood in it, or very little blood, which woul affect the "signs" appearing in your hand, this means

Google Vs Yahoo On Net Censorhip

Although Google has been rightly taken to task for capitulating to Chinese demands to assist in censoring dissidents on the internet, rival Yahoo has been doing vastly worse--actually assisting Chinese authorities in tracking down and imprisoning dissidents. More in today's New York Times. What a shame--now I'm going to have to abandon Yahoo entirely.   Does anybody have a suggestion for a good MyYahoo alternative?

Irc Can Be A Pain..

OK lmao I finally got it worked out. Get this...   I thought I would like to have a chat for Ancient History, so after trying a hundred times to find a server (none of which Trillian would connect to) I stumbled upon BrokenIRC and thought it would be funny if "BrokenIRC" was the only one that wasn't "broken" so I tried it. What do you know, it works. Isn't irony grand? So I join the help channel, get some great help from an admin there in setting up my channel step by step. I had some problems
